In progress

Very rough start to my project. I really like the first two images and find them to almost convey the sense of "sublime" I was reading about for my project. I don't think I'm quite there yet. But hey, it's a start.

I liked this quote by Emmett Gowin though:
"The picture is like a prayer, an offering, and hopefully an opening through which to seek what we don't know, or already know and should take seriously." He continues, "All important pictures embody something that we do not yet understand. In the process we collect a few random yet vivid facts that we didn't know before."

  1. I think that your use of color is powerful in these images. Especially when discussing life and death I think it is important to use color to convey these ideas. Also since you are talking about how all things go through this cycle, this universal whole, it would be beneficial not to include any signifiers to humans. This might provoke the viewer to think about the message as being directed specifically directed at human life's importance. Lastly, the square is working well with your display and I would like to see you continue to use it.

  2. I agree with Catherine, the color is striking in these and to me represent the idea of the significance of life. The bright pop is just so powerful in the mostly monochromatic frame. It shows the idea of us being one part of a giant whole. Also with that i kind of like the ones where the subject is just a small part of the image. It goes along with the idea of color representing that idea. I do like the subtle use of death and life like seeds and dead leaves and also what joseph brought up in class (you putting leaves back on the tree ((shadow of tree)).

  3. I really like the subtle use of color in your images. To me, that helps get the idea of life and death across. My favorite of the four would have to be the picture of the beach through the leaves and branches. There's something about the obstruction of view that really ties together your idea. Maybe the fact that you know what lies beyond but it's not something that is yet available to you. I think it would be interesting to see some experimentation similar to that image. Also, I agree that the use of the square is working in your favor for the series.

  4. I really like the concept of "we live, we die." The photographs of the leaves work well but I'm not sure about the trees and the shadow image? Maybe take some more images showing the "we live, we die" concept. Otherwise I really like the use of lightning in the first image. Maybe you can adjust the other images to have the same effect?
